Linksys: how do I set up multiple mesh extenders?
To set up an additional mesh extender, follow the same steps you used to pair the first extender with your toob router. Here’s a reminder of the two ways to set up:
- Linksys app set up – if you already have the Linksys app
- quick set up – to set up without the app
Once you have paired the additional extender, move it to a place in your home where it can boost the wi-fi signal to the area which needs it most. You may need to move your first extender to maximise coverage.
How best to position multiple mesh extenders?
Put your additional mesh extender halfway between the router or other extender and the area of your home where extra wi-fi coverage is needed.
Tip: Mesh extenders boost the range of your wi-fi by amplifying the signal from your router, so don’t put them in the area where your wi-fi signal is weak as they won’t be able to connect.
There are two options to maximise coverage in your home:
- mesh extenders that link to each other - suitable for homes where range needs extending in one direction
- mesh extenders each link to the router - suitable for homes where coverage needs extending in more than one direction
Just position the mesh extenders where you need them, and they will automatically choose the best setup for your property.
Checking your setup
To optimise your complete wi-fi setup, use the Linksys app to check exactly what coverage you’re getting to each mesh extender:
1) Open the Linksys app
2) Tap the ‘Nodes’ section – the app should show your router and your child node (mesh extender)
3) For each node (Linksys calls a mesh extender a Child Node), the wi-fi signal is shown using a signal strength indicator 🛜 and a decibel rating - you can use this to check the position of your extenders by selecting each extender and checking its signal strength.
Decibel ratings explained
Decibel rating | Status | Best place to put your extender |
-0 to -39 | Too close to your router or another extender | Your mesh extender is too close and can’t boost your wi-fi to areas that need it. Try moving it further away from the router or other extender. |
-40 to -69 | Perfect distance | Your mesh extender is providing a great boost to your wi-fi and should provide great speeds. |
-70 to -100 | Too far away from your router or another extender | Your mesh extender is too far away and may provide slow speeds, or may not connect to your router at all. Try moving it closer to the router or other extender. |
If one mesh extender doesn’t extend the range of your wi-fi to meet our wi-fi guarantee, we’ll send you another mesh extender to cover your whole home (excludes gardens, garages or garage conversions and any outbuildings or annexes).
